Since 2009, after the eradication campaign of Rattus rattus carried out on Zembretta and Zembrettina, a regular monitoring was performed on both the islands in order to prevent any re- infestation either by reintroduction or by proliferation of those individuals which survived to the eradication.
Three different types of monitoring were used: control boxes, complementary trapping and indirect observation of rat activities. During the Small Mediterranean Islands mission (June, 2012), 33 traps were installed with 30 on Zembretta and 3 on Zembrettina. After 5 days of trapping, no rats were captured. The control boxes were also checked and re-baited. The old baits were intact except for a few traces of snail. Indirect observation confirms the total absence of R. rattus activity either on Zembretta or on Zembrettina.
