Since 1995, the Conservatoire du littoral shares its experience with the Tunisian Coastal Protection and Planning Agency in its coastal management policy. A mission of fish counting has been planned in the framework of PIM Initiative and in partnership with WWF-France, from 20th September to 1st October 2010, to realize an inventory of fish resources (following the Biomex method), to acquire quantitative data in order to define the status of these populations around the archipelago, and so provide a zero-state which could serve as reference for future monitoring. At the same time during the mission, a simplified monitoring protocol has been tested and implemented with training of local staff. The MPA of Galite has a very good potential in terms of marine habitats, which should accommodate abundant fish population, but it does not seem to be the case today. According to the observations lead on the field, it appears that this potential will be realized with an implementation of an effective regulation control (like fishing). The Galite archipelago can then play its full role, both as a tool for managing the fish resources by enrichiging the surrounding areas, and also to accommodate a sustainable nautical and marine tourism.
