Knowledge acquisition and ecological restoration

At the end of May 2025, a delegation from PIM Initiative , accompanied by several of the network’s experts, was welcomed by the monastic community that resides on Saint-Honorat for a four-day spring mission, aimed at supporting projects to combat invasive alien species on the island, and thus renaturalize its exceptional original landscapes.

Objectives of the mission :

  • Feasibility studies for future operations to limit invasive species on several islands of the Lérins archipelago: the Black Rat and the Colchis Pheasant, whose impact on certain seabirds and rsptiles is harmful;
  • Knowledge acquisition on the Herman’s Tortoise recently introduced on Saint-Honorat, and surveys on the ants that populate the island for naturalist inventories.
  • Workshops on various issues linked to the protection of local species, and the organization of an event bringing together those involved in the conservation of small species in the south of France;

The event was crowned by the signing of a partnership agreement between PIM Initiative and the Lérins Abbey, cementing years of collaboration in the conservation of this exceptional natural setting!
