What is PIM Initiative ?

PIM Initiative is an international NGO whose objective is to preserve the Mediterranean and Macaronesian islands of less than 1000 hectares, thanks to concrete conservation measures in the field, and the networking of managers and experts at the international level. Programme initiated in 2005 by the Conservatoire du littoral, PIM became an independent NGO in 2017. Its teams support all stages of the creation and development of protected island sites through an integrated approach based on five areas of intervention.

OUR MISSIONS

Improving knowledge and long-term monitoring of ecosystems using simplified and standardised protocols, regular naturalist monitoring, data collection and analysis, and capitalisation of information and knowledge.
Capacity building through workshops, working groups, and training sessions in the classroom or on site, enabling international and multidisciplinary actors to share their experiences.
The development of protected site management techniques and the implementation of co-management systems involving a variety of stakeholders and supporting partnership between them: public institutions, municipalities, universities, local and international NGOs, managers, multidisciplinary experts, private companies, etc.
The protection of emblematic species and their habitat, through ecological restoration actions (such as the eradication/control of invasive species) and an ecosystem approach with better integration of issues relating to the land-sea continuum.
The promotion of the islands’ high ecological value and the establishment of an international campaign for their protection.

For more than 10 years, PIM Initiative has been relying on a panel of multidisciplinary experts, site managers, coast guards, institutions and NGOs from the Mediterranean basin, and now from Macaronesia.

THE TEAM

The NGO is nowadays the main actor acting
for the preservation of the biodiversity of the small islands of the Mediterranean and Macaronesia.
